Salt Restaurant
(W Hotel Barcelona)
Barcelona, 2024

The new SALT restaurant commission at W Barcelona Hotel presented a clear challenge: to create a space that could operate seamlessly as a restaurant, a breakfast area for guests, and a venue for events. The solution lay in designing versatile furniture that designed to adapt to different times of day, while key fixed and iconic elements provide a visual and conceptual continuity across all uses.
A key design element of the project to enhance was its connection to the beachfront: the interior floor level was elevated to provide clear sea views above the terrace, while a system of glazed folding panels was added to create a fluid transition between interior and exterior.

The connection between interior and exterior was essential, envisioned as a single, continuous space. A pergola made of wood and natural fibers extends inward, enhancing the sense of fluidity. The restaurant was visually wrapped in a soft sand tone, evoking the Barceloneta beach, with a microcement floor that recalls the texture of the beach and micro-terrazzo rugs that subtly define areas without breaking spatial harmony. An acoustic ceiling unifies the different areas discretely, while the curved rear wall, clad in vertically placed handmade clay pieces, brings texture and a natural rhythm to the space.

To organise the different areas, we used organically shaped bars that appear to emerge from the ground, visually connecting the whole. Built-in perimeter benches are paired with modular wooden seating, movable planters and custom pieces in iroko wood and glazed tiles. This flexible arrangement allows for an informal, fragmented breakfast setup, which transforms into communal dining tables during restaurant service.
Timeless materials—stone, wood, and textiles—are complemented by lush Mediterranean vegetation. Spotlights above each table are enhanced with ceramic lamps and clay pieces, while the two bars take centre stage through the intervention of artist Ramón de los Heros, who developed a bespoke material to evoke the delicate geometry of the desert rose.
